THE ORIGINAL TWO-TONE ROYAL OAK
Introduced in 1972, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak revolutionized luxury watchmaking through Gérald Genta's groundbreaking design. Its octagonal bezel, exposed screws, integrated bracelet, and exceptionally thin profile challenged traditional notions of the luxury wristwatch. In 1977, Audemars Piguet expanded the original design into precious metals, introducing the two-tone reference 5402SA in stainless steel and 18-karat yellow gold.
Dating to circa 1980, this 39 mm Royal Oak “Jumbo” combines the distinctive geometry of the original design with the warmth of yellow gold. Its integrated bracelet and slim case create a seamless architectural silhouette, while the ultra-thin automatic caliber 2121 preserves the mechanical sophistication that defined the first generation of Royal Oak watches.
HISTORICAL & COLLECTIBLE SIGNIFICANCE
The reference 5402SA occupies a significant position in Royal Oak collecting as the original two-tone interpretation of Gérald Genta's celebrated design. According to Audemars Piguet's historical archives, just 876 examples of the reference were sold, compared with 6,050 pieces across the complete 5402 family. Its limited production, original 39 mm proportions, and connection to the earliest years of the Royal Oak make it a compelling example of one of modern horology's most influential designs.
